A visit in 2002:
The building that was South Charleston High School in the 50s is now the home of the Junior High. Oakes Field (pictures elsewhere in Second-Avenue pages) and its associated gymnasium were used for high school sports then. The Oakes Field complex was across the street from the old junior high school, now demolished. The recreation building adjoining the gym is gone now, replaced by housing.

SCHS played basketball here in the 50s; clean-up, fixup since then makes the place brighter. Picture from the entrance, looking toward the scoreboard.
P2250248.jpg
From the balcony, looking back toward the entrance. Bob and friends usually sat in the bleachers to the left center of the picture.
P2250249.jpg
Balcony, toward scoreboard. In the 50s, the red brick was unpainted, making the place darker.
P2250250.jpg
Balcony over entrance. Bleachers were on both sides in the 50s, only on the right side now. Cheerleaders' reserved bleacher seats marked.

Overall shot toward entrance.

SCHS Library. Memory: sitting in that corner taking the Navy scholarship test. Tough.
P2250256.jpg
SCHS library, first floor.
P2250257.jpg
Stairwell, first to second floors. There's some of that exposed tile!
P2250258.jpg
The old incinerator shaft we were always told to leave alone. Note the nice paint job on the lockers!
P2250259.jpg
Guess we never needed this high-security stuff in the 50's! Were we that calm and under-control?
P2250260.jpg
Used to get a glimpse of the heating apparatus behind the boiler room door from time to time. This time, got a good look. Same machines, new paint?
P2250261.jpg
Chemistry lab, third floor -- Denizens such as Chris Jarrett, Mike Woodford and Bob Lilley made names for themselves here. Not always complimentary...
P2250263.jpg
Ms. Childress' room, 3rd floor -- Senior trig and solid spoken here back then. Note huge gravity heat/return ducts. Sometimes worked too well!
P2250267.jpg
SCHS auditorium -- band concerts, plays, assemblies, pep rallies...
P2250268.jpg
The seats still reflect the original building's purpose as Loudon High School.

Auditorium -- another general view from the stage.

...with footlights.
P2250271.jpg
Those original 30's chandeliers must be valuable today!
P2250272.jpg
Vintage lighting panel for auditorium stage.
P2250273.jpg
As a future electrical engineer, this setup always fascinated me.
P2250274.jpg
Auditorium stage -- Ms.Lynn Cole to left, present SCJHS math teacher who opened doors and helped guide my tour.
P2250275.jpg
Front foyer of auditorium, second floor. Jerry Gorby and I once recorded clarinet and bongo tunes here, taking advantage of the great echo.
P2250276.jpg
The "Black Eagle" snack-shop is now selling used appliances and furniture! Through a glass darkly...auditorium stairwell outside balcony.
P2250277.jpg
IN the stairwell outside the projection room, a dove has built a nest in the light, and the paint still peels, 40 years later.
P2250278.jpg
Auditorium from balcony.
P2250279.jpg
Looking through the port into the projection booth. No more 16 mm films here! Guess it's all DvD and videotape in the classrooms.
P2250280.jpg
And we bid fond adieu to the auditorium.
P2250281.jpg
...and visit the cafeteria -- a little brighter than in the 50s.
P2250282.jpg
And, those PCs weren't there 'way back when, either.
P2250283.jpg
Behind the counter, ran into a '60 graduate (forgot her name), who recalls some of the people I recall (best friend of my best girl, for example).
P2250284.jpg
In the "new building" looking from the cafeteria toward the band room. Those lockers were all olive drab in the old days...
P2250285.jpg
My locker was about in the center of the picture; those of Tom Connolly and other band people nearby. Band room just through the door and to the right.
P2250287.jpg
Band room, picture from where the cornets used to sit. Eighth grade band period just ending. Pete Raspillaire would have sat in picture center.
P2250288.jpg
Band room, looking toward the flute section, my favorite.
P2250289.jpg
Picture's a bit shaky, but the point is clear. Clock outside band room NEVER really worked. Picture was taken at about 10:30 AM.
P2250290.jpg
Wall drawing, claiming the building for the Junior High School. No more Black Eagles here.
P2250291.jpg
Principal's office in front on the first floor.

On the way out, a shot of the official building plaque.
