Christmas 2002 in Santa Barbara was exciting, amazing, new, traditional and poignant all at the same time.
Bob had just lost his father and had spent considerable time settling the early matters relating to the estate.
And then, the next generation, and the next after that, arrived for this most joyous of times. The
past-future contrasts, and the memories, were present moment by moment, but the opportunity to share the season with our
daughters and their families, and to see the rapid changes in the grandsons as they learn their world won the day!
Enjoy our "home movies"!

The season begins to get really jolly as second grandchild Kai David Chalmers arrives with parents in tow, from Seattle.
PC180412.jpg
And, the grandparents get set to spoil him!
PC180413.jpg
He seems oblivious at this point, but we'll get through to him!

Meanwhile, back at home, the cats are getting ready for the big day...

Karen and Ellen took Kai for first professional portraits...

...with pretty good results...

...for Kai and mom both!

Meanwhile, first grandson Brandon Harshman did a little celebrating at home in Toledo, OH, before making the trip to California.

Brandon and dad Andy check out the Mandarin orange concession.
PC240465.jpg
...and qhat could be so interesting down there?
PC240464.jpg
Whatever's down there, maybe they'd like one of these.
PC240462.jpg
Oh! Fish! And a decoy duck!
PC240470.jpg
A little dubious right now, but bet they'll be friends.
PC240474.jpg
Tis the season...
PC240477.jpg
...well, we have the excuse that there are SIX more people here than usual...! The "before" picture.
PC250489.jpg
And here they are! Duncan and Kai Chalmers, Suzanne Harshman, Karen Chalmers, Brandon and Andy Harshman, and Ellen get into Christmas. Bob, of course, hasn't yet figured out how to use the camera timer!

When the going gets confusing, retreat to a high pillow and watch.
PC250492.jpg
Or, check out that bubble-wrap -- weird stuff!
PC250501.jpg
Or, get into a box and guard what's left... The cradle is very old, from 'way back in Lilley family history, but not very well documented.
PC250502.jpg
Just can't stay disinterested for long...
PC250511.jpg
But sleeping in the sun is always good. With all the new people here, Christmas is taking longer than ever!
PC250513.jpg
Duncan and Kai take a break. Notice, it's definitely a green christmas -- bright and sunny.
PC250519.jpg
Delightful confusion abounds in this "after" picture.

Time for Christmas turkey and trimmings.
PC250521.jpg
Had to take a second picture to do justice to Kai.

Brandon takes an interest in a magnetic retrieval tool -- or could be a conductors baton? A bat?

Suzanne keeps an eye on Brandon during a short breather.

Nikita discovers a small catnip toy...
PC250481.jpg
...with a little follow-up craziness...
PC240473.jpg
How'd I do getting that sock off? Applause?
PC240472.jpg
...and there's my foot.
PC240467.jpg
Now, that's a bunny -- I know that!
PC250517.jpg
WE're down to just a few boxes, and I'm guarding this one.
PC250516.jpg
Hmmm...now, what can I do with this?
PC250504.jpg
Hey, that sun idea is a good one. I'll slow down the action on these boxes a little...
PC250495.jpg
Awright! Leggo, Mom! Pooh and Tigger and wheels -- this will help with the mobility, too.
PC250490.jpg
Don't know what's in the box, but the paper is good enough to eat.
PC250498.jpg
The cradle Kai's using is the old one from Bob's late parents' collection; also the Golden Books. For the next generation...
PC250515.jpg
This was a favorite Christmas picture from cards offered by the Chicago Art Institute, Bob spent a little time there while working in Chicago this year.

This card seemed appropriate for this Christmas of new beginnings. From Marty Poppe, a professional associate.

Is it over yet? I just gotta get some sleep!
